Anschliessend lebt er im Handelshaus der Ostindischen Handelsgesellschaft in Guangzhou (Guangdong), wo er mit Hilfe katholischer chinesischer Sprachlehrern seine chinesischen Sprachkenntnisse verbessert, trotzdem es durch einen chinesischen Regierungsbeschluss bei Todesstrafe verboten ist, einem Ausländer die Landessprache zu lehren. Er plädiert für einen Kulturaustausch zwischen China und Europa.
