As might be inferred from their deficiencies in linear drawing and landscapes, they eminently fail in delineating the human figure in its right proportions, position, and expressions, and of grouping the persons introduced into a piece in natural attitudes…"

Vertrag von Tianjin mit Grossbritannien und Frankreich. Er gibt das Recht, Diplomaten nach Beijing zu senden, neue Konzessionen zu errichten, Handel zu treiben und Opium zu verkaufen, Anerkennung des Christentums und Reisebewilligung. Der Yangzi wird für den Handel geöffnet. Als Gegenleistung wird der Rückzug der Engländer aus Tianjin und die Räumung der Festung Dagukou. Den katholischen Missionen und den chinesischen Katholiken werden die Rechte der Freiheit des Predigens und des Landerwerbs im ganzen Land eingeräumt. Der Katholizismus wird toleriert und Verfolgung von Christen wird bestraft. Auch protestantische Missionen profitieren von diesem Vertrag. Jean Baptiste Louis Gros unterschreibt, S. Wells Williams nimmt daran teil.
Russland darf in Shanghai, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Taiwan und Hainan Handel treiben und ein Konsulat zu öffnen.
1860-1862 S. Wells Williams hält sich in Amerika auf.
