Yuan Muzhi recalled his preparations for the role of Uncle Vania in 1930. Believing he would have to play a Russian peasant. Having never seen a Russian peasant, he naturally had no idea how they looked, dressed or behaved. Yuan then came up with an original solution : for the three months that the Xinyou theatre troupe rehearsed Uncle Vania, he spent his weekends dining at a Shanghai Russian restaurant and observing its patrons—members of the city's emigre community.
