Pan, Jiaxun. Jin dai xi yang wen di zhu ben [ID D26355].
Pan schreibt : "Strictly speaking, it is not just society but also the individual that Ibsen wanted to deal with in his problem plays. Furthermore, we can say that in his plays individualism is not only a central theme, but also a point of departure as well as conclusion. Individualism recognizes the individual as part of the people. The self cannot be separated from others ; therefore there is no isolated existence of the self. True individualism is not selfishness ; the indivudial also cares for the benefits of others because one knows that he is inseparable from the other people and if the other people are not saved, he also cannot save himself. The mose precious and meaningful thing in the world is truth. Only when the individual is allowed an opportunity to develop himself freely will truth be found. The reason for Ibsen to emphasize individualism is that he sees it as most important to the development of a person. All institutions, whether law, government, family and religion, should not become a hindrance to personal development and the pursuit of truth."
