Civilized nations should never lose sight of the fact that they are uninvited guests in the Middle Kingdom, that they forced their way through the barriers behind which the Chinese wanted to preserve the sanctity of their traditions, the authority of their government, the purity of their customs, and the inviolability of their national ideals." |
