Yuan Jin : LaDame aux camélias introduced the use of letters and diaries as a narrative form to Chinese fiction and this influenced romantic fiction in particular. Traditional Chinese fiction letters, when they appeared, tended to be letters challenging an enemy to war ; very few were expressions of the innter world of a character. Chinese have been writing diaries for over a thousand years but fiction writers, until the appearance of La Dame aux camélias, had ignored the potential for incorporating the diary form into creative fiction.
