"Cette lettre ne désire rien qu'exprimer ce qui me frappe et déconcerte depuis quatre ans en Chine : l'absence d'une bonne part de l’esprit français : celle qui, désintéressée du gain fondé sur la Chine, s'appliquerait aux choses de l'esprit chinois, et ferait enfin état de la sinologie pour elle-même, dans son pays d'origine."
Yvonne Y. Hsieh : Segalen wrote to the French minister in Beijing proposing the establisment of a library and an art museum which would facilitate the task of French sinologists studying in the Chinese capital and benefit the local people at the same time.
